Again, Bono uses his lyrics to say something, but leaves the interpretation up to us. Several explanations for this song have surfaced.
1)The song uses satires commercialism. How modern technology, such as virtual reality, makes it possible for consumers to block out their own reality for a dreamlike world of their own.
2) It can be about sex on television and how the media uses sex to sell products.
3) Unattainable love. People often have dreams about TV artists and musicians. They’re not the real thing but in our heads they’re even better than the real thing because the media makes them look so perfect, so beautiful, so sexy.
4) Sex, pure and simple. Oh now…here she comes… and…take me higher…
Just a quick note on the lines: We’re free to fly the crimson sky, the sun won’t melt our wings tonight. In Greek mythology, Daedalus made two pairs of wings- one for himself, one for his son, Icarus- by adhering feathers to a wooden frame with wax and used them to flee from the Labyrinth of Crete. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun. But Icarus became ecstatic with the ability to fly and flew higher and higher. The wax melted, the feathers came loose and Icarus plunged to his death in the sea.

Give me one more chance and you’ll be satisfied
Give me two more chances, you won’t be denied
Well my heart is where it’s always been
My head is somewhere in between
Give me one more chance
Let me be your lover tonight
(Check it out)
You’re the real thing, yeah the real thing
You’re the real thing, even better than the real thing
Give me one last chance
And I’m gonna make you sing
Give me half a chance
To ride on the waves that you bring
You’re honey child to a swarm of bees
Gonna blow right through you like a breeze
Give me one last chance
We’ll slide down the surface of things
You’re the real thing, yeah the real thing
You’re the real thing, even better than the real thing
We’re free to fly the crimson sky
The sun won’t melt our wings tonight
Oh now… Here she comes
Take me higher, take me higher
Can you take me higher?
Will you take me higher?
You’re the real thing, yeah the real thing
You’re the real thing, even better than the real thing
Even better than the real thing
Even better than the real thing
