Love is blindness

It’s been said that this song is about Northern Ireland and the misguided love a terrorist feels for his country and that it leads to totally blindness – blindness for what you are fighting for, the act of violence becomes a purpose in it self. But the more reasonable explanation seems to be a song about deceit, betrayal, an unfaithfulness- and sometimes you just don’t want to know about it. It’s dark and shadowy, reflecting the environment of the whole album. It depicts love at the end, bleak and despairing.
The lyrics give way to the simple, grief-stricken guitar solo that Bono says is “a more eloquent prayer than anything I could say with the song.”

Love is blindness

Love is blindness
I don’t want to see
Won’t you wrap the night around me
Take my heart
Love is blindness

In a parked car
In a crowded street
You see your love made complete
Thread is ripping
The knot is slipping
Love is blindness

Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers to numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness

Love is blindness
I don’t want to see
Won’t you wrap the night around me
Oh my love… Blindness

A little death without mourning
No call and no warning
Baby… a dangerous idea
That almost makes sense

Love is drowning in a deep well
All the secrets and no one to tell
Take the money…
Honey…
Blindness

Love is blindness
I don’t want to see
Won’t you wrap the night around me
Oh my love… Blindness
