U2 was ready for something new, something different. Forget trying to make sense. It was time to stop making sense- or at least, obvious sense. They were ready for what came next.
During WWII in Germany, cities were being bombed, buildings were crumbling and people were getting killed by the thousands. In the midst of war, the walls of the Berlin Zoo came down and animals roamed free in the streets. It was a moment of illusive freedom amidst chaos. That story struck Bono as ironic. It was a metaphor for what was going on in Germany during the recording sessions. Businessmen were buying property left and right, pimps and prostitutes were everywhere, pickpockets and dealers finding fresh meat.
Zoo Station straddled the line between the old East and West Germany and Bono found the metaphor too perfect to resist. It opens the album, telling the listener that he/she is going to a place U2 had never been before. It is time to journey into the new and unknown. U2 had changed and we’d better get used to it.
