The death of Michael Hutchence, lead singer of INXS, had come as a shock to everyone. Found dead November 22, 1997 in his Sydney hotel room, many people, including his lover, Paula Yates insisted that is wasn’t suicide. Bono had seen it differently. After many discussions on the senselessness of suicide with Michael, Bono became angry with the thought that Michael had chosen what some see as the easy way out of a hard situation. This is where the basis of this song comes from.
Bono goes on to say:
“The greatest respect I could pay him was not to write some stupid, sentimental soppy fucking song. It’s like somebody’s in a stupor and you’re trying to wake them up ’cause the cops are coming and they’re sitting at the wheel and you’re trying to get them out of the car ’cause their gonna crash it.”
