The Ocean

Dubliners are familiar with the sea, so there was no a giant leap of the imagination required for Bono to picture himself wandering – lonely as a cloud, as it were – at its edge, the ocean splashing the soles of his shoes and washing his feet.
“The Ocean” is just a complete teenage thought. It is the thought of every teenager. It is the thought of everybody in a band who thinks he can change the world.
The most crucial line, however, is in the first verse: “A picture in grey, Dorian Gray/ust me by the sea/AND I FELT LIE A STAR.”On one level, this is ust teenage narcisism and self-indulgence. Musically, it achieves an appropriately lyrical and poetic quality.

A picture in grey
Dorian Gray
Just me by the sea

And I felt like a star
I felt the world could go far
If they listened
To what I said

Washes my feet
Washed the feet
Splashes the soul of my shoes
