Some of Africa’s top musicians have paid tribute to rocker Bono’s humanitarian efforts by recording a new album of U2 cover songs.
In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 sees stars including singer Angelique Kidjo, hip-hop band African Underground All-Stars and Soweto Gospel Choir cover some of the Irish band’s best-known material.
And Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars team-up with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry for a run through U2’s 1983 song Seconds.
A percentage of the album’s sales will be donated to the Global Fund charity, which fights AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
The disc’s co-producer Shawn Amos says, “A lot of the familiar hooks are there but played in cadences and with instruments that are indigenous to African people.
“It’s a testament to how global U2 is, that you can instantly recognise a song when it has been deconstructed, translated and played with different instrumentation.”
